Compare cylinder and valve arrangements
Single-cylinder engines are compact and make the piston–crank relationship easy to follow. Twin-cylinder and multi-cylinder layouts can provide more frequent power impulses and more complex timing to study. Reversible marine engines add a reversing arrangement that matters when the engine is intended for a model boat. Beam engines and mill engines show different ways to transfer reciprocating motion to a flywheel or driven load.
Check the steam source before the engine

Live steam can combine pressure, boiling water, flame, hot metal, moving flywheels and lubricants.
